Essential Newborn Care (ENC)
Teaching Learning Package for Pre-service Education
11th January, 2010
Preface
India is at a threshold of massive scaling up of newborn health services with ongoing focus on reducing newborn and maternal mortality. With high institutional delivery by skilled providers, it is possible to provide quality newborn care. With launch of Navjaat Shishu Suraksha Karyakaram by Government of India on 15 September 2009, it is all the more important that future generation of health professionals are educated for essential elements of basic newborn care.
Nearly 75% of neonatal deaths occur in first seven days of life. Most of them are preventable, if evidence based practices are followed by all healthcare professionals.. Pre-service education of undergraduate medical and nursing students often lacks adequate emphasis on acquisition of skills for care of pregnant mother and the newborn, hence there is need to strengthen pre-service education. It is commonly seen that at many places the teachers have no access to modern information technology or are not skilled to use the internet and other current resource materials
The Essential Newborn Care Learning Resource Materials (ENC-LRM) is designed to fill this gap and provide the opportunity to use the available best practices in the pre-service education by teachers and tutors of Medical/ Nursing/ Midwifery Schools. This will ensure uniform standardized teaching of future generations of health care professionals.
The power point lectures along with matching script are developed for student centered interactive learning. These are not usual power- point lectures but motivate students for active learning using problem or case based scenarios. Each topic starts with objectives provides information on current best practices using multiple methods for enhanced learning for students and summarizes key messages learnt. Faculty is encouraged to make the sessions interactive and collect feedback from students (like ask: what are three new practices/messages they learnt).
This resource material is based on WHO-CC/AIIMS Essential Newborn Care Package 2008-09 and WHO HQs Essential Newborn Care Course for primary health care providers 2004-05. The ENC-LRM is field tested at SMS Jaipur, Rajasthan ; St John”s Medical College Hospital , Bangalore ; Government Medical College , Chandigarh ; Maulana Nursing College , Ambala ; PSG College of Nursing Coimbatore ; College of Nursing at AIIMS , New Delhi. The feedback and suggestions of students & teachers have been incorporated.
We would appreciate receiving your constructive feedback for improving the LRM. Feel free to customize and adapt the materials in local language for enhancing teaching learning. Very soon a set of video films along with script (for local translation) will be available for supplementing clinical bedside teaching.
